A year ago, during the joyous Diwali celebration, an unexpected turn of events altered the course of my life. I woke up the next day unable to move my arm, and it was later diagnosed as a stroke. The ensuing weeks in Lucknow were filled with therapy, but progress was slow, and uncertainty loomed. Searching for answers, my wife, employed by Zydus Group, introduced me to Dr. Arvind Sharma in Ahmedabad. Under Dr. Sharma's guidance and a battery of tests, a shocking revelation emerged - Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Which was also treated by Dr Talati later. The untreated condition posed long-term risks of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Empowered by this knowledge, I journeyed to reclaim my health. Utilizing a CPAP machine, shedding significant weight, and adopting a proactive approach, I successfully managed my diabetes and hypertension then and am now on no medication for the same. Recovery wasn't a smooth path. Driven by determination and aided by innovative techniques, including using robots and games in therapy, I regained mobility. While the stroke left its mark, I now lead a normal life – driving, working, and embracing a second chance at health. My story is a testament to resilience and the significance of self-care. I share this narrative with fellow stroke survivors, assuring them they are not alone. The journey is arduous, but recovery is possible. My gratitude extends to my family, dedicated doctors, and therapists who supported me. After enduring a decade-long battle with insomnia, I was on the verge of giving up hope. I had tried every possible solution, from lifestyle changes to consulting numerous doctors, and desperate for a solution, I even travelled to neighbouring countries but all my efforts were in vain. Hope was dwindling until I arrived at Zydus Hospitals, Ahmedabad to consult Dr. Lav Selarka, Senior Cochlear Implant Surgeon & ENT Specialist. His diagnosis was a revelation, and he identified underlying problems in my nose and throat. A sleep endoscopy and a CT scan revealed a multitude of issues: severe obstructive sleep apnea, septum deviation, sinusitis, massive adenoid hypertrophy, enlarged tonsils, a hypertrophied palate, and lingual tonsillar enlargement. Dr. Lav devised a comprehensive surgical plan to address all five problems in a single procedure. After countless sleepless nights, I finally experienced a restful slumber following the procedure. Mr. Bhavik Agarwal, a 27-year-old medical representative, arrived at Zydus Hospitals, Ahmedabad, with severe headaches. Investigations revealed severe sinusitis on the left side, indicating frontoethmoidal disease. To address the condition, a procedure called Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) was performed under general anesthesia. However, after the surgery, Mr. Agarwal's muscle tone and power did not recover adequately for adequate respiration, despite the reversal of anesthesia. The anesthesia and ENT teams considered the possibility of cholinesterase deficiency, a rare condition that affects the elimination of anesthesia. Laboratory testing confirmed the diagnosis, with Mr. Agarwal's cholinesterase level at only 255, significantly below the normal range of 5900 to 12200. To treat the deficiency, the patient received one unit of fresh whole blood, as blood from first-degree relatives could not be used due to the risk of the same enzyme deficiency. This treatment proved successful, and within 12 hours, Mr. Agarwal was weaned off the ventilator, extubated, and discharged the next day without any weakness or further support required. The multidisciplinary team at Zydus Hospitals, including surgical, medical, anesthesia, critical care, and laboratory departments, worked together to promptly diagnose and treat this rare case.
