A 75-year-old woman with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, primary hyperparathyroidism, and high calcium levels was referred to Zydus Hospitals in Ahmedabad.
A scintigraphy scan (a diagnostic test used to evaluate parathyroid function) revealed that she had a right superior parathyroid adenoma, a benign growth in one of the parathyroid glands. These glands secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH), which helps regulate calcium levels in the body.
Traditionally, surgery is the recommended solution in such cases, but the patient was hesitant. So Dr. Divyesh Dadhania and Dr. Saketh Rao, the team of Interventional Radiologists at Zydus Hospitals in Ahmedabad, performed the state's first microwave ablation for parathyroid adenoma.
This was performed under sedation, and adequate hydro dissection was achieved to protect nearby organs from thermal injury before ablation. The entire procedure was carefully guided by continuous ultrasound imaging.
Remarkably, her PTH levels returned to normal just two hours after the procedure. And within 24 hours, she was discharged from the hospital, relieved and happy.
