A year ago, during the joyous Diwali celebration, an unexpected turn of events altered the course of my life. I woke up the next day unable to move my arm, and it was later diagnosed as a stroke. The ensuing weeks in Lucknow were filled with therapy, but progress was slow, and uncertainty loomed. Searching for answers, my wife, employed by Zydus Group, introduced me to Dr. Arvind Sharma in Ahmedabad. Under Dr. Sharma's guidance and a battery of tests, a shocking revelation emerged - Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Which was also treated by Dr Talati later. The untreated condition posed long-term risks of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Empowered by this knowledge, I journeyed to reclaim my health. Utilizing a CPAP machine, shedding significant weight, and adopting a proactive approach, I successfully managed my diabetes and hypertension then and am now on no medication for the same. Recovery wasn't a smooth path. Driven by determination and aided by innovative techniques, including using robots and games in therapy, I regained mobility. While the stroke left its mark, I now lead a normal life – driving, working, and embracing a second chance at health. My story is a testament to resilience and the significance of self-care. I share this narrative with fellow stroke survivors, assuring them they are not alone. The journey is arduous, but recovery is possible. My gratitude extends to my family, dedicated doctors, and therapists who supported me. Reflecting on this transformative period, the stroke took something from me but instilled a profound appreciation for life and resilience. I always had a betel nut in my mouth. It had become more of a habit, helping me stay awake and relaxed amidst day-to-day chaos. But then, one day, chaos began. A chaos in which no nut could keep me calm. The chaos began inside my body. I began to struggle with daily activities, coughed frequently with white mucus, and had difficulty breathing. Over the course of seven months, I visited several hospitals, consulted numerous doctors, and received treatment for asthma and gastroesophageal reflux disease. However, there were no signs of improvement. My family insisted on a more advanced evaluation, so we visited Zydus Hospitals. At Zydus Hospitals, I was immediately taken for a High-Resolution CT scan of my chest. The scan revealed signs of bronchitis-bronchiolitis, which suggested tuberculosis. However, still unsure about the underlying cause of my mysterious respiratory distress, the doctors referred me to a team of specialists. I was referred to Dr Manoj Singh, a Pulmonologist & Critical care specialist. Upon closer inspection, the specialist discovered a mysterious lesion obstructing airflow in my right main bronchus (the passageway connecting the windpipe and the lungs). It turned out to be a betel nut that I had accidentally aspirated a year earlier, causing chronic respiratory distress and inflammation. Without further delay, the team of specialists at Zydus Hospitals carefully and precisely removed the betel nut from my bronchus. After being discharged from the hospital, I was prescribed bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory medication, which significantly reduced my respiratory distress and resolved the inflammation in my lungs. This unusual case serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough evaluation and careful management of patients with mysterious and persistent medical issues. In 2019, a young female presented at Zydus Hospitals with a large pituitary macroadenoma affecting her optic chiasma. After consultation, Dr. Dipak Patel, our Senior Neurosurgeon, referred her to Dr. Om Lakhani, our Endocrinologist. In coordination with the Laboratory department, we found the 'high-dose hook effect,' or the “prozone phenomenon," where extremely high levels of prolactin (PRL) can interfere with the assay and produce low readings. This was one of those cases which was prevented by doing undiluted and in 1:100 dilution before releasing the report. Instead of surgery, our experts pursued a medication-based approach to 'melt' the tumor. The patient underwent treatment with cabergoline and hormone replacement therapy. Remarkably, after just one month of follow-up, a repeat MRI revealed a 1/5th reduction in tumor volume and restored normal visual fields. Fast forward to 2023, when the same patient returned to Zydus Hospitals for a different reason - the birth of her child. She was on steroids and was advised a CS delivery. Her sonography just 24 hours before the surgery showed oligohydramnios, which resulted in having to do the surgery under General Anesthesia. Dr. Namita Shah, our Gynecologist & High-risk Pregnancy Obstetrician, successfully performed a cesarean section to bring her child into the world.
